FromSoftware has announced that Armored Core 6: Fire of the Rubicon has surpassed 3 million copies sold, a remarkable milestone for a series that previously held a firm place in the niche video game genre. At the time of this announcement, the game was less than a year old, which is certainly not a slow pace for a new entry in a legacy IP.
As for how this game compares to previous games in the series, those numbers are a little hard to track. Data from VGChartz, the only site with data on most games in the series, shows that no previous game has ever cracked the 1 million copies sold milestone. The closest to that number was Armored Core 2 on the PS2, which is said to have sold around 790,000 copies during its lifetime. With that in mind, you can see how insane Armored Core 6’s sales actually are.

It’s worth noting that back in October 2023, Rusty’s Japanese voice actor announced that the game had sold over 2.8 million copies, so momentum has clearly slowed in the months since the game’s release. But even so, games like this with strong single-player campaigns and lots of replayability have managed to maintain steady sales years after release, so it’s fair to expect this number to slowly rise in the coming months. I don’t expect it to exceed 4 million copies, though.
This begs the question, why did Armored Core 6 sell so much better than its predecessor? There are obvious reasons, such as FromSoftware’s surge in popularity after the release of the Dark Souls series and Elden Ring. Those games are bound to decline in popularity, especially since Armored Core 6 inherits some of the features from the aforementioned games. But it’s worth noting that while Armored Core is a niche game, it’s still a well-respected series in the minds of those in the gaming community. In this day and age, good intentions, good memories, and a good track record can go a long way.
