- Warning: spoilers for Star Wars: The Phantom Menace and the Phantom Menace 25th Anniversary Special #1 comic
There is no other character in Star Wars more wasted than Qui-Gon Jinn, who was played by Liam Neeson in the Episode I: The Phantom Menace. And it’s not exactly the actor’s fault, but rather the film’s: Darth Maul kills him during his confrontation on Naboo. Obi-Wan Kenobi, his apprentice, took Anakin Skywalker as a Padawan in honor of his master and the council reluctantly agreed.
It wasn’t the end for Neeson as a Jedi. He reappeared as Force Ghost in the series Obi-Wan Kenobi and the character has continued to live on in some comic book stories. Even so, he remains a thorn in the side of many Star Wars fans.
Now, taking advantage of the recent May the 4th Be With You (Star Wars Day) and the 25th anniversary of The Phantom Menace, Disney has added some canonical scenes showing Qui-Gon Jinn acting as a teacher with Anakin Skywalker. They add to the master’s only real lesson to the young Padawan: the meaning of the word “Midichlorians,” a concept that has resurfaced with the series. The Bad Batchand his involvement in The Force.
Anakin: Am I dangerous?
Qui-Gon Jinn: Anakin… everything you feel is what any normal boy would feel. But people with our abilities… with your potential… must have higher aspirations. We have to learn to control our emotions, for the good of all. No, you are not dangerous. You are special.
The comic Special Nº1 of the 25th Anniversary of The Phantom Menace It shows the master instilling the first lessons in his apprentice, which are about emotions. Qui-Gon Jinn proves once again that he is no ordinary Jedi and that he has a deeper understanding of the force: he accepts emotions as something natural (unlike other Jedis who are more stoic), but also understands that they must be controlled to be balanced. In a strict sense, he was not his teacher… but he gave Anakin very important foundations, as indicated by the ScreenRant media.
