It doesn’t take a detective to know that the laws of physics and superhero movies rarely go hand in hand. From speedsters traveling at the speed of light to world-devourers, many characters are completely unaware of the concept of science. Yet, according to one of the most celebrated scientists on the planet, there is one case that tops all the rest.
In an interview with ComicBookastrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson pointed out what he believes to be the film that most violates the laws of physics: SupermanThe scientist, in a humorous tone, criticized the film starring Christopher Reevepointing in particular to the famous scene in which Clark Kent reverses time by flying around the Earth.
“Okay, so he flies backwards around the Earth. Time reversed. If he had slowed the Earth down and stopped it, he would have killed a billion people because all the oceans would have washed away the continents and all this for the sake of saving Lois. So, this was, like, in terms of violating all known laws of physics, that’s the ultimate. The rest of it is just magical stuff that maybe one day we’ll figure out how to do. You know, like… Doctor Strange. See, I prefer Rick from Rick and Morty because when he opens those portals, he uses real science whereas Doctor Strange uses magic. So, this is real science that I’m going with here.”
Tyson explains that the main problem he has with this scene is that it is far removed from anything mystical, so physically speaking, the result of what he would do Superman It would be more of a catastrophe of biblical proportions than a resource to avoid greater evils.
Likewise, the scientist enjoys these productions like a little child, and does not want any of these terms to end the fantasy of seeing Superman saving the day once again. Let’s hope these laws of physics don’t get broken with the character’s next film, which hits theaters worldwide on July 11, 2025.
