News culture “It’s a religion” For this director, Star Wars is much more than a simple SF saga
Even though Star Wars has always caused controversy across generations, one has to admit that the new trilogy produced by Disney seems to have won the genre prize. This isn’t really surprising for this director, as Star Wars is a real religion.
More than an SF saga, a religion
When Disney bought Star Wars, fans were already divided into two categories. There were those who, in Mickey’s ears, wanted to give the company a chance, and those who already thought that the universe created by George Lucas was dead and buried. It took several years Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens never made it to theaters, and that didn’t really help the critics. Despite a convincing new cast and successful visual effects, the film was directed JJ Abrams what then heavily criticized among other things because of its similarities with the first work in the saga. However, The latter more or less saw it coming, because he already knew that this license seemed like a real religion to certain fans. In any case, this is what he explained to Daisy Ridley when he chose her for the role of Rey:
Understand the scale. It’s not a role in a movie. For some people it is a religion. It changes things on an unimaginable level.
While we can hardly prove him wrong, it remains surprising to imagine that JJ Abrams could have given that speech to Daisy Ridley when he hired her, all without preparing a real plan for the new trilogy. Because if the character Rey has attracted a lot of criticism because her power sometimes comes out of nowhere, Most of the criticism of this new trilogy has been more about the script than the casting. However, it was the actors who were at the forefront of the barrage of abuse, most notably Daisy Ridley.
Daisy Ridley, collateral victim of the new trilogy
While the prospect of starring in a franchise as popular as Star Wars could amaze any actor (and especially those who have yet to make a name for themselves in the industry), one has to admit that those who have had the chance, in… Not everyone from the new trilogy has fond memories of this experience. For example, on the French show Clique, Daisy Ridley talked about her feelings after watching Star Wars 7:
I told myself that I was shit, that I was truly worthless. I cried my eyes out because I thought I was the worst thing that could ever happen to Star Wars. I had never seen myself in a leading role before, so it was something unexpected and very surprising for me, it shocked me.
Between the release of episode 7 and the release of episode 8, the British actress developed anxiety so severe that she lived with holes in the wall of her stomach.
