Appears in a few days God of War Ragnarök for the PlayStation, and we can obviously be very excited. Because according to an overwhelming majority of international tests, a great game is waiting for us here. In this article you can find out what the Metacritic rating is and what the publications particularly praise. You can see our own detailed test here:
God of War Ragnarök im Test
Exactly because of such games we love our hobby
On Metacritic Ragnarök is currently in fabulous 94 out of 100 points, which result from the average value of 117 tests. This allows the game to compete with its predecessor from 2018, the on the PlayStation 4 also a 94 could reach.
Even better than its predecessor?
Most ratings for Ragnarök range between 90 and 100 points, but only a few testers give the game between 80 and 90 points. More than a third of all publications even rated the new God of War with 100 points and are convinced that this is an almost perfect game. Write something like that Lloyd Coombes von Dexerto
God of War Ragnarök is a complex and well thought out game that takes everything that made its predecessor an unmissable experience to even greater heights. The story is packed with unforgettable characters seamlessly woven into a world that feels more alive than ever. The combat system manages to add new tricks even after dozens of hours. Ragnarok is here and it’s glorious.
Apparently Ragnarök can convince most testers again with an emotional and exciting story. Write something like that Matthias Dammes from PC Games:
Ragnarok is simply fantastic. The story is well told and the characters are well written. […] From the first hour to the last I was emotionally involved and concerned about the fate of the characters. The twists and turns in the story and all the sometimes really brilliant ideas fascinated me again and again.
But the combat system and the boss fights, which are clearly similar to the predecessor, are also very popular with some successful innovations. James Billcliffe from VG247 expresses his excitement as follows:
So much information is communicated naturally to you through subtle cues – the thud of an attack on an armored enemy, or the faint sparkle of a fully charged punch – so choosing your own style within the skillset is instinctive. […]
They (the boss fights) do a great job of incorporating unique mechanics without coming across as cheap or too easy. And indeed, these boss fights are symbolic of what makes God of War Ragnarök great: an incredibly successful blend of gripping story and brutal action that not only produces an impressive and mesmerizing spectacle, but also has a passionate concern for its outcome.

God of War: Ragnarök – Spoiler-free combat gameplay with lots of blood
Overall, many publications judge the game as a successor that doesn’t dare to make revolutionary innovations, but further refines the already great features of the new edition from 2018 and repairs some weaknesses such as the lack of enemy variety.
What is actually criticized?
Despite the prevailing euphoria, there is some criticism in the lower third of the ratings. Some testers would have wished for a little more innovation in the gameplay, and some bugs were probably encountered that could limit the fun of the game. However, the history is sometimes criticized most clearly, writes about Matt von Digitally Downloaded:
In this story-driven, narrative-focused experience, I want a game that’s bold enough to really express something and give me something to think about. Challenges me to a level beyond my ability to press buttons. God of War Ragnarök is a master at manipulating emotion, which is often mistaken for depth. […]

God of War Ragnarök – The new story trailer gives us goosebumps
For others like Ken McKown from ZTGDthe varying speed of the story poses a problem:
God of War Ragnar Oil is an outstanding game with questionable story pace and flow at times. There were moments in this game where I just stared at the screen in admiration. But there were also times when it felt like the game was doing everything it could to keep me from progressing or enjoying its playground.
Jason Faulkner von Game Revolution on the other hand, enjoyed everything about the story up to the climax:
The game’s only flaw is its weak climax. Everything up to this part is gold. Of course, it’s also hard to find a degree that satisfies everyone when basically everything is at stake.
How Ragnarök players like the story will be seen in a few days after the release. However, given the overwhelmingly positive voices, a major success would not come as a surprise. Finally, there are a few ratings in the overview.
This is how the international publications rate it
