Sonic the Hedgehog 3 certainly won’t be the end of the series’ live-action adaptations, as the director hinted that there will be more character teases in the future.

Earlier this year, Sonic movie producer Toby Asher said he wanted Sonic to be an “Avengers-level event,” and it sounds like there are still plans to make that happen. Director Jeff Fowler recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly about the upcoming trilogy, and like the two previous films, he said we can expect the end of the film to tease another character from the game for future projects . While Fowler didn’t reveal who that person was, he did say, “It’s fun to see fans arguing online about who comes next and who gets teased by the end of the movie.”

“We have a lot of the same conversations. We all have our favorites in filmmaking, and we both make a good case for ‘It should be this or that.'” It’s fun to keep that anticipation going, and the movie is It’s no different when it comes to teasing new characters. “Personally, you can find me at the betting shops putting all my money on Big Cat because there’s no way we’re going to make another movie without him, right? Well, the more likely scenario is People like Metal Sonic or Silver the Hedgehog and Flame Cat, but I can dream, right?

Interestingly, Fowler also talked about developing Shadow’s storyline for the third film, and the source material is obviously a bit heavier than you might think (Maria, a young girl who was Shadow’s closest friend, was shot dead in the game, She’s ready to appear in the movie). “That’s the challenge with these movies,” Fowler said. “We always have to draw from previous video games and comics and stuff like that. How do we take the essence of what fans love and fuse that with the cinematic treatment that we create?

“We certainly have a lot of respect for what the fans expect to see and what they love about the character. We’re also very aware of the times and the right way to approach this type of imagery in a family movie. I think we really set the stage for what I think fans will watch as they watch this movie and truly appreciate the effort and love that Shadow and Maria put into telling Shadow’s story and giving fans the best movie version imaginable.”

Since the movie doesn’t hit theaters until December 20, there are definitely a lot of questions about what will happen to Maria, but now we’ll just have to find out in theaters.
