The long awaited Civilization VII has already presented a trailer and has given us a release date, revealing some of the great new features of this new turn-based strategy game based on one of the longest-running series and loved by fans of the genre. In this first preview we have already seen some of the civilizations and historical leaders whom we will be able to control, such as the first Roman emperor Augustus or the pharaoh queen Hatshepsut, leaving us wondering how many and what other great civilizations will be present in the game.
We have been fortunate to visit the team of Firaxis Games We were in Baltimore to play Civilization VII for four hours, which allowed us to ask them about this and other questions. Is there debate when it comes to choosing the game’s protagonists? “Of course. There’s always some debate,” one of the game’s main players told me. “We all have our favorites, and then there are the fan favorites, so it’s a good idea to have a few more.” We always end up with a long list of potential candidates
It is at this point, “based on a lot of different things,” that the writers of the latest X-COMs begin the selection process.
A more diverse Civilization
Without going into details about what civilizations we will find, Firaxis Games states that one of the criteria they follow is to bet on “a good geographical diversity”. It’s not all about Europe,” they add. So taking as a reference the fans’ favorites, the team’s favorites, and also other questions like “who we’ve never had before,” the authors of the Civi saga are creating that definitive list with the leaders and civilizations that will be present in the game.
It’s not an easy task because there is so much to choose from. “You would have to represent everything, and also through time, throughout all these centuries of history. We want options from antiquity, but also modern leaders. We want everything to be represented,” they explain.
Bringing Civilization to new players
Strategy games like Civilization can be overwhelming for many new players, which is why Firaxis Games has been trying to make things easier for players for years. make your games more user-friendly
“We want a new player to be able to come in and just enjoy the game. They can ignore a lot of the stuff that’s going on in the world. The action will continue, and they can just experiment and see what happens.” But fans, he adds, will still find “a lot under the hood” – the usual management, warfare and diplomacy options that have made this one of the most highly rated strategy series in history. “It all depends on the level of player and how involved they want to be in the game.”
