The DLC called The Dark Horizon is not the only new feature that has recently arrived in Remnant 2. Gunfire Games announced a free update with two very important additions: the Fragment system and a new game mode called Boss Avalanche.

I want to talk to you about the boss fight mode. It’s not exactly what we’ve seen in Lords of the Fallen and Stellar Blade, and I think it’s a formula that would suit FromSoftware’s Souls and other Soulslikes like Lies of P and Black Myth Wukong. First, though, I’m going to quickly go over the Shard system.

The Fragment system Remnant 2 It has no mystery, but it adds an important extra of progression and specialization for the character. It consists of the Prism Stones and the runes that surround it. The latter are obtained during the games and are used to select three attributes that you want to enhance. The rest can be accumulated or destroyed to power the Prism.

The Prime Prism is powered by the first six runes we add and grants benefits with each level based on the runes added. For example, if you add a Skill Cooldown stone, there is a certain chance that each level will grant a boost to that stat. The choice of image is not too good because I was discovering how the system worked.

I admit that Boss Rush mode Remnant 2 It hasn’t been exactly what I expected. My idea was something similar to Clash of Champions Lord of the Fallen– A list of previously defeated bosses that you can repeat without limit. I already showed you how it works in another post. It turned out to be a lot more fun than I imagined and another example that FromSoftware should put on its bucket list.

It turns out that Gunfire Games has taken the “boss rush” thing to heart. Its name in Spanish, Avalancha de Jefes, doesn’t seem so appropriate… but it also makes some sense. It’s not a list of bosses that you can manually select, which would have been nice as an additional option, but rather a much more fun concept, which follows the philosophy of Remnant 2 and that has +100% replayability.

I had a very, very good time playing Boss Avalanche. It would have been perfect if the servers Remnant 2 worked correctly. Matchmaking can be torture, and I can’t count the number of times on one hand I’ve had “network errors” during co-op games. Aside from this problem, the mode itself is great.

It works as follows. Within the mode there are three options: Triple Threat, Trial by Fire and The Challenge, whose difference is the number of random bosses you must overcome. There are three, six and nineteen bosses respectively. The last two add up as the last challenge to Annihilation, the final boss of the game. It’s right up there with FromSoftware’s scariest bosses, and I’m not exaggerating. Within each option you can choose between four difficulties.

It’s not just three fights in a row. That would have been too easy and boring. Gunfire Games presents each game as a series of chained and random mini-dungeons, similar to what happens in the game. To reach each boss you must first overcome one or more rooms with enemies, including one or several Aberrations, which are random mini-bosses.

It’s interesting because no two games will ever be the same. The scenarios change worlds (Losomn, Yaesha, N’erud, Labyrinth) depending on the random boss you play. The normal thing is that the enemies belong to that world, although I could swear that I have seen aberrations of N’erud in Yaesha, I am not sure. What does always vary is the type of enemy and the Aberrations. And yes, it includes the scenarios and bosses from the three DLCs released so far.

Just knowing this, Avalanche of Bosses already had me absolutely conquered… but there is more. You start each game with your character fully equipped. There are no restrictions or penalties when entering each game. This makes the mode a perfect experience for any player: level up the Archetype, farm materials, practice combat, try out a build, or simply destroy everything without thinking too much.

Additionally, during the games you get a series of temporary power-ups. You choose a few until the gaps are filled and then you enhance them. It works similarly to the Fragment system. There are stat buffs and passive abilities like leaving pools of corruption that damage enemies. The possibilities are quite varied.

What I like most about Boss Avalanche is that it is a mode reserved exclusively for action. Remnant 2 It has exploration phases, solving puzzles and secrets, platforming and some skill challenges. All of that is left out, except in very specific areas. You slaughter enemies room by room, defeat the final boss and start again without interruptions. Also, enemies come out again if you stay in the same room too long. It is a loop of constant violence.

It can be played alone or cooperatively. Completing it alone can be a challenge, especially since there are no rest points (stones, bonfires or lanterns), but the real fun is in teaming up with two other players. I’ve played quite a few games and almost all of them have been wonderful chaos, but my favorite is the one you can see in the YouTube video above.

I had a player who was a tank and his main attacks were with his fists. I gave it my new archetype healing drone (Celador) and it became a tsunami: it devastated the entire room because it didn’t have to worry about life. I was refreshing the drone with the skills of the Engineer archetype and it practically had constant and unlimited life. It was extremely fun!

I think Boss Avalanche would suit FromSoftware’s souls very well, especially Elden Ring, and other soulslikes like Lies of P y Black Myth Wukong. This may sound heretical to many people, but I think Hidetaka Miyazaki and many other developers in the genre should take note of the work of Gunfire Games.

Not because there is a lack of quality, but because it is a mode that provides a lot of replayability and another option to continue playing beyond the trite New Game+. Imagine this same thing in Fire Ring! There are more than enough scenarios, dungeons and bosses to make a mode with hundreds of combinations. And the same applies to the rest of the soulslikes.
