Despite being one of the best games of 2023 and one of its biggest surprises, this horror game still hasn’t paid off for its developer. It’s a shame for one of the toughest competitors in GOTY!
Is Alan Wake 2 a critical and popular success?
At the end of April, it will be time for studios to take stock of their 2023 financial results and look back on the past year. While some share good news with their audience, this is not true for all and some even make surprising discoveries at times. This is the case, for example, with Remedy, the Swedish studio behind Max Payne, Quantum Break and Control, returned to the results of Alan Wake 2, which will surely surprise more than oneespecially considering its quality.
Here’s what Remedy’s financial report for the first quarter of 2024 says: We first learn that Alan Wake II has sold 1.3 million copies worldwide since its release. Given this score, it is the fastest-selling title in the history of the still fairly modest Swedish studio. A huge achievement considering the title may have been nominated to win the Best Game of 2023 award. However, one sentence puts into perspective what could be described as a resounding success.
“An important part”
A little further on, we can read that Alan Wake 2 “recouped a significant portion of its development and marketing costs.” Although this may sound rather positive, if we read between the lines, we understand that the development costs for Alan Wake 2 have therefore not been fully incurred, meaning it’s still not profitable for Remedy. A real surprise for a game that was nominated for Best Game of the Year at the Game Awards ceremony. While horror remains a niche genre, the title received widespread attention and praise from critics and gamers, making this result all the more surprising.
In any case, The verdict still remains quite vague and we can give Remedy the benefit of the doubt while we wait for official confirmation. Nevertheless, we hope that the title will pay for itself given its quality.
