Japan’s TV Asahi recently asked international anime fans for their top 20 favorite anime, and the results convinced me that no one actually watches anime.
Back in March, TV Asahi’s Sosenkyo Twitter account announced that they would be hosting a special program featuring the top 20 new anime films as chosen by international anime fans. The show apparently polled 1,740 people from around the world to find out who non-Japanese anime viewers thought was the best. Don’t worry, you don’t have to watch the three-hour special to find out, because the Twitter account has conveniently listed them for us.

Here’s the full list, which certainly shows that most people are just thinking of the anime they’ve watched recently, not the best ones:
- Essays on Cruel Angel by Yoko Takahashi (Neon Genesis Evangelion)
- The idol of YOASOBI (Son of Shinobu)
- Song of Voltes V Author: Mitsuko Horie (Voltes V)
- TK Unlocked from Ling Toshite Sigure (Tokyo Ghoul)
- “Kick Back” by Kenshi Yonezu (Chainsaw Man)
- Blue Bird (Naruto Shippuden)
- King Gnu’s SpecialZ (Jiu-Jitsu Express)
- “we are! 》Author: Hiroshi Kitani (One Piece)
- Again by YUI (Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood)
- Aonosumi, Kitani Tatsuya (Jujutsu Express)
- “Samurai Heart” (Some Like it Hot!!) by SPYAIR (Gintama)
- LiSA’s Gurenhua (Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba)
- Cha-la Head-cha-la by Hironobu Kageyama (“Dragon Ball Z”)
- “Butterfly” by Koji Wada (Digimon Adventure)
- Silhouette author: KANA-BOON (Naruto Shippuden)
- Kaikai Kitan by Eve (Jiu-Jitsu Express)
- tank! Seat Belt (Cowboy Bebop)
- Higuchi Ai’s Demon Son (Attack on Titan)
- Shinzo wo Sasageyo! Author: Linked Horizon (Attack on Titan)
- Red Lotus Palace by Linked Horizon (Attack on Titan)
Now, there’s no denying that there are some dangerous things on this list. To this day, The Essay on Cruel Angels still deserves to be at the top of the list, and it is truly the best essay ever written. I’m also a big fan of some of the other tracks on there, like Chainsaw Man’s Kick Back, Cowboy Bebop’s Tank! And Cha-la Head-cha-la from Dragon Ball Z. But…there are very few old OPs here.

Three of them are from “Jujutsu Kaiden”, the other three are from “Attack on Titan”, and the second place is the opening of Shinobi, which is also a hit, but what about the second place? Even if we have to consider modern anime, where does Mob Psycho begin? How about “JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure”, “Death Note”, “FLCL”, “Soul Eater”, “Serial Experiment Lain”, and “Sailor Moon”? I’m starting to think anime fans don’t even watch that much anime. Seriously, if you voted for this list, watch more anime.
