John Romero just received a Lifetime Achievement Award for his work on DOOM, Quake, Wolfenstein, and more throughout his decades-long career.
The awards are presented as part of the Game Developers Choice Awards, which present prestigious awards to indie and AAA titles alike. It is one of the most prestigious awards as part of a developer-focused program.
“Thank you so much for this amazing award. It took a lifetime to get it!” Romero said after accepting the award. He will continue to thank the developers he has worked with in the past, the developers he works with now, as well as his family and friends.
Romero joins a truly legendary team of developers, including Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii, Uncharted creator Amy Henig, Double Fine’s Tim Schafer, and other luminaries in the gaming industry.
In addition to this award, the Game Developers Choice Awards posthumously honor Mabel Adis with the Pioneer Award. As the first female game designer, she will receive the award, which recognizes breakthrough business, technical and game design milestones.
