Joker may have hit $1 billion at the box office, but its sequel’s opening weekend in the U.S. was even lower than that of Morbius

Oh Honey; 2019’s “Joker” was a box office hit, grossing $1 billion, but “Pas de Deux” couldn’t beat even Moebius in its domestic opening weekend.

You know, I’ve never really understood how Todd Phillips’ Joker did so well at the box office, despite the character being so popular. Like, a billion dollars? Seriously? The guy who made “The Hangover” made a movie that was so successful? So, of course, there were some pretty big expectations when the sequel was announced, and after the first weekend, it’s pretty safe to say that those expectations were not met in the slightest. “Joker: Pas de Deux” was finally released last Friday (October 4), exactly six years after the original film, and its opening weekend in the United States took in… $37 million. For context, the first film grossed $39 million on Friday alone.

That’s bad enough, but what’s even worse is that it’s somehow a worse domestic opening weekend than Morbius , Sony’s 2022 Not-So-Spider-Man movie, is an absolute flop . Obviously, this is a pretty heavy blow to all the leading actors. About Joker: Pas de Deux, but what can you do? It’s not 100% clear why this movie did so poorly, but I can only imagine it was a combination of poor early reviews and a lack of curiosity about what a solo Joker movie might be like, which certainly helped the first one . Plus, who even asked for a second one besides the executive who saw the dollar sign?

The cost of “Joker: Pas de Deux” is believed to be around $200 million, a significant increase from the $65 million of the first film, which is obviously bad news for Warner Bros. One of the company’s comic book movies beat out 2015’s abysmal “Fantastic Four,” which received a C- rating. I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before we see this on the Max.
