Aside from this, NeocoreGames will be organizing a PVP event. This will be open to higher-tier Kickstarter backers, game streamers and other influencers in the King Arthur community. More information will be given to us as the weeks go by and the release date looms closer. The team has been hard at work on the game, even releasing a December Balance Patch last year.

What is King Arthur: Knight’s Tale?

For those unaware, King Arthur: Knight’s Tale is a tactical turn-based RPG being developed by NeocoreGames. This is also the same team behind the ARPG Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor Martyr and The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing series of games. They are also responsible for other games in the King Arthur universe.

Players take up the mantle of Sir Mordred, the mortal enemy of King Arthur who is considered a black knight in this universe. Both of you have perished at each others’ hands, but something brought you back from the grave. The Lady of the Lake then embarks you on the quest to finish off King Arthur, once and for all.

Morality at a Cost

Mordred must make some tough decisions throughout the game. He will make choices in dialogue or on the overworld map. His choices will affect the Morality system that the game features. Mordred can choose to remain truly neutral, become more Rightful or become more of a Tyrant. In terms of his faith, Mordred can choose to become a Christian or to honour the old religions and hang on to the Old Faith.

Different Heroes

Different Heroes

Aside from the story turning out differently, morality choices also affect the heroes who will join you as well as the upgrades available to you. This ensures that players will still get new content even on a second playthrough.

Heroes of the Round Table

As you go around exploring Camelot, you recruit a squad of heroes. The Round Table is reborn, as you will. Then, you will get to know these characters, care for them, develop their skills and talents, and become a shining example towards them. These heroes are not mere names and numbers on a stat sheet. They will have unique personalities that may sometimes clash with your own. If they do not share the same beliefs as you, they may even leave you and become a foe later on.

Tactical Combat

Tactical Combat

There are rumoured to be around 30 or so total heroes in the full launch. Each hero will have a different class that determined his Skills and Weapons that they can use. So far, there are a total of 6 classes: the Champion, Defender, Marksman, Vanguard, Arcanist and Sage.

For Camelot!

Combat in King Arthur: Knight’s Tale is very tactical, slow and methodological. The game uses a grid-based movement system similar to X-COM or Pheonix Point. Instead of there being an “Initiative” mechanic that determines character turn order, the player can move all their units in a single turn, then the AI makes their move, and so on. Each hero has a set number of Action Points that are used for movement and attacking in combat. Heroes can even save up action points to be used later on while you wait for a better opportunity to act.

Manage Your Health

Manage Your Health

Managing your heroes Health, Armor and Vitality is also of paramount importance. Armour reduces damage taken, Health is a secondary life bar that takes damage before Vitality. Vitality is the actual health of a unit. When Vitality reaches 0, a hero dies.

The damage heroes take between fights is persistent, which means these values do not regenerate in between fights. Recovery is rare, and you can only specify a specific type of resource to restore.
