Developed by Redemption Road and published by tinyBuild, Kingmaker recently surprised everyone with its wacky (and technically impressive) first trailer, and while we don’t have a specific release date yet, it seems Hollywood is already interested in bringing it to the big screen.
Via GamesBeat, we’ve learned that Story Kitchen, the newly formed production company behind the Sonic the Hedgehog movie and the upcoming Tomb Raider animated series (among a host of other gaming-related projects), has signed on to help develop a live-action film based on the unreleased third-person shooter.

Dmitri M. Johnson, Co-Founder of Story Kitchen, said: “Kingmakers’ action, world-building, and compelling sci-fi make it the perfect combination to create a new Hollywood franchise… We have always been big fans of tinyBuild. As a publisher, they put out amazing games that we love to play. We keep a close eye on what they are developing and are always trying to find the next best opportunity to work with them.” Looking at the simple yet powerful premise of Kingmakers, one can easily see how it could cleverly will its way into a simple action movie that touches on multiple sub-genres at once.
While most of Story Kitchen’s promised movies and shows have yet to materialize in any way, it’s safe to say that Sonic the Hedgehog did a pretty good job, and even recruited new fans to Sega’s flagship franchise, which is more than many veteran Hollywood producers and studios can claim for their video game adaptations. At this point, it’s hard to know if Kingmaker will have much to offer beyond the first two to four hours of mindlessly shooting medieval knights with shotguns and running them over with trucks, but maybe the world is ready for a spiritual successor to Army of Darkness (sans the undead and walking skeletons, of course).
As for the game itself, its Steam page currently promises a 2024 release date and little else, but perhaps we’ll learn more about it soon. We do know that some light tactical elements and co-op are part of the overall experience, so it should be interesting to see how everything fits together (or doesn’t) beyond the appealing basic premise once we get our hands on the game. The game will also be released on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
