The latest movies and the latest series can be played on KinoX in German and English. Compared to going to the cinema, users don't even have to follow the showtimes, and this offer is completely free. Often, streams also have high-quality HD quality.
No wonder KinoX.to and other providers [such as Movie4k] are very popular. But is streaming legal here?
Is it illegal to watch a stream on KinoX?
KinoX is currently being blocked by various Internet providers. This has shown that the offer is illegal. In October 2014, Internet providers A1, Drei, Tele2 and UPC have banned access to Kinox.to and Movie4k.to. In March 2018, Vodafone Kabel also had to follow suit in Germany. The trigger was a copyright lawsuit.
Indeed it is: the use of free streaming portals is clearly copyrighted, which constitutes copyright infringement. The European Court of Justice made this clear in 2017. Therefore, these are not legal offers.
As a result, users will face civil law, with the worst case being criminal consequences.
Therefore, the following applies: If the portal “obviously” provides illegal content and the user accesses it, he will be punished! In short, you have to check for yourself whether the stream is from a legitimate source. If you watch an illegal stream, you will be punished.
Why can I still use KinoX?
Despite being illegal and blocked, Kinox.to is still popular. How could this former provider block be due to civil lawsuits filed by authors such as Constantin Film against various Internet providers. The final ban regulates only the affected Internet providers, not the platform itself, and investigators are happy to remove the platform itself from the Internet. However, it has apparently not been successful in localizing the Kinox server so far. They are probably located abroad, which makes this operation difficult.
Users also quickly found a way to bypass provider access blocks. Because the block is implemented by the provider through the Domain Name System [DNS]. However, there are many DNS servers on the market to choose from, which can be quickly configured on any device, and does not include the Kinox.to locking feature. However, other users effectively bypassed the block using a VPN server.
To avoid domain locking, the operator of Kinox.to also protects more than 200 replacement domains-so-called mirrors-such as Kinox.su or Kinox.sg. These are not sister portals or counterfeit products, but rather addresses that forward you to Kinox.to. Since these are not technically related to Kinox.to, all replacement domains must be blocked individually. For these reasons, Kinox will continue to be heavily used, despite the provider being blocked.
Watch out for these streaming portals!

What are the consequences for users?
In order to cause civilian harm or criminal prosecution to users who continue to broadcast on Kinox, the Kinox server must first be confiscated. The IP address can then be read out and copyright infringement can be proven. Currently, this is only effective for seven days after a seizure. User data is then deleted automatically. In addition, the server must first save the IP address. They don't always do this, and most of the time the servers are abroad, which makes accessing them more difficult.
However, users are playing with fire here, EU case law clearly considers violation of use of Kinox.to and its sister site, As explained by Christian Solmecke, an attorney at "Wilde Beuger Solmecke Rechtsanwälte" in the video below.
