this Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic The remake is currently in limbo, but a recent report at least suggests it’s still in development.
It’s safe to say that things haven’t sounded too good for a Knights of the Old Republic remake since it was announced in 2021. A report last year said development had halted as developer Aspyr laid off several key employees. Now, as first reported by Insider Gaming (thanks PCGamer), Embracer Group’s full-year report seems to confirm that Knights of the Old Republic is still in development, even if that may mean little about its development.
The project is listed as being in active development in a section titled “PC/Console releases announced as of May 24, 2023,” which lists a number of other upcoming games. There isn’t much else to tell about the game other than that it’s coming to PC and PS5 (which we already know) and that it has an “external” publishing partner.
Saber Interactive (Aspyr’s parent company) may have taken over development, according to initial reports that development on Knights of the Old Republic remake has stopped. It’s been assisting with the project, so it’s entirely possible, although without any sort of formal comment it’s unclear who might be working on it, and what stage of development it might be in.
Originally released in 2003, Knights of the Old Republic celebrates its 20th anniversary in July. Developed by Mass Effect developer BioWare, it’s set 4000 years before the events of the original trilogy. It’s a fan-favorite among Star Wars video game players, and the clamor for a remake is high, so we’ll have to wait and see if it makes it through the rough times it’s been having.
