When Last Epoch left early access last week after almost four years, there was a huge rush: While the average player numbers previously mostly in the four-figure range, some played on the weekend over 260,000 role-playing fans at the same time. This makes Last Epoch one of them 40 Spielen with the highest number of players ever measured.
At the same time, however, they have fallen in recent days Steam reviews
Balancedab. So what happened?
Ongoing server problems
Apparently the servers are simply overwhelmed by the sudden rush of players. Since the launch of version 1.0, there have been various problems that have made it difficult or even impossible to play Last Epoch: Among other things, players cannot enter the game at all, lose the connection in online mode, or are stuck for a long time in loading screens.
The developers have been working on making things better since the release, but the first few days were still pretty chaotic. In the meantime, the servers had to be switched off for a short time in order to install updates.
These have probably improved in the meantime, but problems still occur.

Last Epoch 1.0 – Test video for the very good Hack and Slay
While the content innovations in version 1.0 appeal to many players arrived well, The technical problems cause frustration and discussions. Two positions in particular could be observed on the official Discord server and Reddit:
- Especially fans who have been playing Last Epoch for a long time show understanding for the developers: They point out that there is only a small team behind the role-playing game and cannot react so quickly to problems. The transparency of the developers, who communicate directly with players on Discord and Reddit and inform them of changes, is also praised.
- Others see the technical problems more critically: Last Epoch advertised an online mode, but it will not work at the time of release. This is a big problem and should have been solved before the launch.
The many negative Steam reviews (of 32,116 recently submitted reviews, 13,483 are negative) obviously come from players who take the latter position.
In our test of version 1.0 of Last Epoch, we were not able to go into detail about the server problems because they only arose after it was released. But if you’re interested in what role-playing game awaits you beyond the hopefully temporary technical quirks, then take a look!
