Details for the 2023 season of League of Legends have just been revealed, giving players of the popular Riot Games MOBA their first look at what’s in store for them next year.
It looks like a packed twelve months full of champion updates, new champion releases, a colorful new skin line and a whole new change to the ranking system to keep them engrossed.
Below, we’ve broken down each major League of Legends 2023 season update into its own section, so you can quickly jump to what piques your interest.
New league title and 2023 rework
Two new heroes will be released in 2023: Milio and Naafiri.
Milio – the mage champion from Ixhtal – will be released first, with Darkin mid laner Naafiri following later this year. WWE doesn’t know much about these champions yet, but we do have some teaser art that hints at their aesthetic.
In addition to the two new characters joining the League of Legends roster, there are a ton of champion updates planned for this year! Over the weekend, updated information and footage from Ahri and Aurelion Sol was revealed. Ahri’s abilities and skins will get a complete visual upgrade, while Aurelion SOl will get a kit rework from the ground up, and will now be able to crash into stars and shoot lasers at enemy heroes.
A little more tempting… Ahri’s new look is now available on the test server. đź”® pic.twitter.com/W7CO2HsbU9

But there’s more. Skarner’s VGU update, which has been teased for the past few months, is still a work in progress, and we’ll see League of Legends’ favorite scorpions bear fruit later this year via a dedicated dev diary. To help tide us over, we’ve been given some more concept art to give us some idea of where the team is headed to lead the championship.
We also got a sneak peek in the Nico update, showing cheaters disguising themselves as interactable objects like exploding cones. She can also apparently disguise herself as minions and guards, which is sure to make me tear my hair out while freezing lanes myself.
Nidalee and Varus are also getting minor updates this year with minor tweaks to their gear to improve their performance, but nothing major.
Two other champions — an unnamed jungler and mid laner — will also be updated soon, but there are currently no details on those. Ultimately, the team expressed their desire to have roughly mid-cycle updates on the champion every two months. This timeline is not specific as the amount of work varies with each rework, but it should give you an idea of what to expect going forward.
Also, don’t expect to vote again this year for future updates. Since Riot hadn’t reached the bottom of the last community vote, they chose to avoid doing it again until the last request was cleared.

2023 League Ranking Changes
Perhaps the biggest change to Solo Goblins is the huge change to qualifying for 2023. On the one hand, seasons have been halved, and the year now consists of two seasons, each with its own rank.
This is to try and make ranked seasons more attractive. According to executive producer Jeremy Lee at a press conference about the changes, this is done to stop players from taking long breaks from ranking after reaching a goal, just to prevent ranking drops or jumping Smurfs.
Additionally, you will no longer need to reach Gold to earn Prestige skins for Ranked matches. This means that players of any tier can take home prizes, but it’s important to stress that the requirements for prestige skins below gold will be a lot of work. Basically, you have to grind hard, but stay solid silver or bronze to get the skin.
It’s also worth noting that while the champion rework community vote was off the table this year, they haven’t completely stopped voting on new skins yet.
This concludes our wrap-up of League of Legends’ 2023 roadmap. Which part of the season are you most excited about? Let us know below!
