The outrageously expensive Ahri skin in League of Legends continues to attract criticism from the community, which is now reacting with significantly higher ban rates for the character.
Riot Games recently introduced the Hall of Legends, a hall of fame for the greatest and most famous esports athletes in the history of League of Legends. Midlaner Faker was the first to be introduced into the Hall and was also given two exclusive skins. One of them is Immortalized Legend Ahri, the most expensive version of which costs a whopping $500 to unlock.
This pricing has caused considerable criticism of Riot Games in the community, but the developer studio recently defended itself on the issue. Players are now finding their own way to express their discomfort with this approach. The call to simply ban the character Ahri in every match if possible and thus exclude her from the game seems to be bearing fruit.
With the arrival of the new skin in patch version 14.12, Ahri’s ban rate in ranked matches has already risen from around 8 percent to over 15 percent – and there’s a good chance that this trend will continue. The ban wave is most pronounced in North America, where Ahri is banned from a game in over 23 percent of games.
Basically, heroes who have a very high win rate or who are currently very strong in the game’s meta due to buffs are chosen for bans in a game. Using the price of a skin as a reason is rather unusual. What do you think: justified criticism of Riot Games?
