Riot Games will soon be giving the starting signal for the 2024 season – and for this they have planned plenty of innovations and fresh content in the successful MOBA.
The new 2024 season will start in a few days in the successful and long-standing MOBA League of Legends – and shortly before the start, Riot Games gave an outlook on the numerous innovations that await you this year. It starts on January 10th with an animated video in the style of The Call, Ruination and Warriors marked the start of the season.
What can you generally expect over the course of the year? Several new champions are set to expand the roster of characters, starting with Smolder, who we were able to introduce to you in more detail in another news report. In addition, some existing characters are receiving major revisions, there are innovations to the champion mastery system, the arena mode is returning and a new game mode is also coming to League of Legends. And: Of course, the e-sports scene is also returning with big events!
For the existing champions, Skarner is being overhauled visually and gameplay-wise; The release is scheduled to take place in the first half of the year, as the revision is now almost complete. In addition, two other champions are to be reworked, including one that appears in the Netflix series “Arcane”, which starts its second season in November. The new portrayal of this character in LoL is intended to follow the portrayal in the series. Shyvana will also be adjusted.
The new champion Smolder, a young dragon that will shake up the bot lane, will be available on the PBE server from January 9th. This is followed next by a mid-range vastayan solo lane mage.
In terms of skins, Rammus and Olaf will receive new species; Prestige skins will be available in 2024 for Rakan, Ezreal, Kindred, Evelynn and Kayle, among others. Lee Sin will receive a general visual update in early March, and Teemo will receive a general visual update later in the year. The first event of the year will be the Lunar Transition event, which introduces the Skyscale skin series and brings back the Porcelain skin series. Other skin series that will make a comeback in the first half of the year include Feenhof, PROJEKT and Blutmond.
The ranking system will be adjusted in the new season to better determine the individual skills of players. This is intended to better avoid games with higher-ranking opponents. We also want to better counter second account players and bots with the optimized system in the future. Last but not least, the ratio of LP gains and losses in wins and losses will be adjusted to minimize frustration among ranked players.
The arena mode is coming back in a revised form in the first half of the year and will in future rely on not just four, but even eight teams of two. URF will be part of the Lunar Change event in patches 14.3. and 14.4 and a new game mode, which will make the core elements experienceable in a new way, is planned for the remainder of 2024.
Last but not least: When it comes to e-sports, the first big event will be the Mid-Season Invitational (MSI) in Chengdu, China, from May 1st to 19th, 2024. The 2024 World Cup will run from September 25th to November 2nd, 2024 , with the preliminary round and Swiss phase taking place in the Riot Games Arena in Berlin, the quarter and semi-finals in the Adidas Arena in Paris and the finals in the O2 Arena in London.
