At the start of 2025, the long-running MOBA hit League of Legends is getting a whole host of innovations. Included: a new season structure, a new jungle monster, revised champions and more.

With the beginning of 2025, the long-standing MOBA success title League of Legends will once again receive a whole range of innovations to ensure that the gaming experience remains fresh. Riot Games has first confirmed a new season structure. There will be three seasons of 16 weeks each, with each season dedicated to a specific theme and tracking champions from different regions of Runeterra. This is intended to tell an overall story. The season will also receive themed gameplay updates, modes, mini-games, champions and skins. The focus of the first season is Noxus; The opening is expected in January via cinematic trailer.

The champion Viktor, who is also featured prominently in the Netflix hit series “Arcane”, is receiving a comprehensive update including new visual elements and an updated background story. The hero's gameplay will remain largely the same, but there will be a thematic adjustment of the ultimate ability. All Viktor skins will also be revised in this context.

Season 1 in the new year brings a new jungle monster to the game with Atakhan, the harbinger of decay. This will appear after 20 minutes on either the top or bottom of the map. This depends on where the most champion damage and kills were recorded up to the 14 minute mark.

Atakhan's arrival is announced by the appearance of his arena, which permanently changes the map with two new walls. Atakhan has two forms: the “Destructive” Atakhan and the “Greedy” Atakhan. The former generates bloody petals and a grove of blood roses that can be collected as well as granting enhanced effects for epic monster rewards, while the latter grants the team that defeats it a buff that revives the wearer after fatal damage. With the introduction of Atakhan, the spawn times of the Rift Herald and Baron Nashor will be adjusted to 16 and 25 minutes, respectively.

Other gameplay changes in Season 1 revolve around Noxus. Goals like first blood, first tower, or killing the first three epic jungle monsters grant Noxian boot upgrades via the Deeds of Strength mechanic. There are also revised tank items, new runes and an adjustment to “Teleport”.

With “Swiftplay”, a new game mode is also being introduced in selected regions, which is being introduced as a replacement for Quickplay. In terms of scope, the mode should be between the classic Summoner's Rift and ARAM and also provide more strategic elements like ARAM.

The year 2025 will be rounded off by a one-time ranking reset in January with no further resets over the course of the year, a multiplayer practice mode and a battle pass adapted to the new season system. Rewards are then purchased directly via the pass, event tokens and event shops are no longer required. With the free pass you can earn up to 12 skins per year.
