Officially, we only know about Bioshock 4 that it is in development. Otherwise, the developer studio Cloud Chamber has been silent about the new shooter like a grave.
Nevertheless, information trickles through again and again, for example at the end of 2020 there were hints Open world approaches and role play elements discovered in Bioshock 4.
Now there is new (and purely unofficial) information: The author and game journalist Colin Moriarty revealed details about the setting of Bioshock 4 in a podcast episode Gamepressure and Gamerant.
Where does the information come from?
Colin Moriarty is a long-time game journalist, podcaster at Last Stand Media and a developer himself. In 2020 he joined Lillymo Games as chief creative officer and story writer. As part of his Podcasts »Sacred Symbols PlayStation« for Patreon supporters he spoke about the new Bioshock. His information was later obtained from the usually well-informed website VGC (Video Games Chronicle) confirmed, but are to be understood as a rumor until an official statement is made by the manufacturer.
What new information is it about?
The new information relates primarily to the location, the basic story and the setting of Bioshock 4. Moriarty makes the following statements:
- Location: Bioshock 4 is set to take place in Antarctica, more precisely in a fictional city called Borealis (Latin for “north”). Borealis is supposed to be a dystopian and isolated place, which is in line with guesswork, of the game will be called Bioshock: Isolation. As usual for the series, a lighthouse should again play a central role.
- Time period: Bioshock 4 is said to be based in the 1960s, i.e. in the same decade as the first Bioshock. Jack’s crash over the Atlantic and his discovery of Rapture take place in 1960, while Bioshock Infinite is set in 1912. The story should be closely interwoven with the three predecessors. It is unclear how Borealis, Columbia and Rapture could be related exactly.
Kurioser Fun Fact: Like the website PCGamesN reports, by the way, this scenario would be a great coincidence for fans of Half-Life, because the original concept of Half-Life 3 intended that Gordon Freeman was looking for a scientific research vessel called the Borealis at the South Pole.
Reveal and release of Bioshock 4
According to Moriarty, the new Bioshock should appear in 2022. The title and year of release were also determined by the well-known CoD leaker RalphsValve bei Twitter confirmed. He also speaks of the game being revealed in late 2021 or early 2022.

Many fans therefore assume that we will see a teaser at the Game Awards in December. However, this has not been confirmed. You can read here why GameStar editor Peter is worried about Bioshock 4:
Story focus or live service
Bioshock 4 will be a loot shooter ?!
Moriarty also draws parallels between Bioshock 4 and the new game by Bioshock inventor Ken Levine, who works on a very own sci-fi shooter with story focus works at Ghost Story Games (formerly Irrational Games). This title should also be on the development line by now.
Obviously the projects are quite similar: “One is aware that these games are being compared with one another. And by the way, both appear on Take-Two, ”says Moriarty.
