Behind you! A completely unexpected game announcement! In fact, publisher Devolver Digital just announced a new Monkey Island out of nowhere. So a sequel to one of the most legendary point & click adventures of all time.
The new game is titled Return to Monkey Island and is scheduled to be released in 2022. Not much is known about the specific content so far. But at least there is a first trailer that probably gives a foretaste of the art style of the new adventure. In addition, it has already been announced that the inventor Ron Gilbert is again significantly involved. Original co-writer Dave Grossman is also back. Now only Tim Schafer is missing.

A new third part?
Surprised also announced publisher Devolver on Twitterthat Return to Monkey Island should pick up where Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge left off 30 years ago. This makes sense in that after Monkey Island 2, neither Gilbert nor Grossman were involved in the further development of the Monkey Island sequels.
Apparently, in 2022 we will finally find out what vision the original authors actually had in mind with a sequel. The events from The Curse of Monkey Island, Escape from Monkey Island and Tales of Monkey Island are therefore completely irrelevant for the new part.
Incidentally, the game is being developed by Gilbert’s own Studio Terrible Toybox, while Lucasfilm Games acts as the licensor. Lucasfilm Games itself was revived just a year ago. Even then, this raised some hopes for a new Monkey Island:
