If you’ve ever used Lego Ideas, you’ve probably seen some fans The Legend of Zelda SetWell, not anymore, as LEGO has apparently banned Zelda ideas from the service.
But if you haven’t touched Lego Ideas yet, let me quickly explain it for you. Fans can submit ideas for LEGO sets (get it?), providing proof of concept for how they should look. Sometimes it’s something simple, like a car, but there are actually some notable licensing entries, like the Steamboat Willie set. So of course, fans are trying to get some Zelda series through, but according to Brick Fanatics, that’s no longer possible.
According to Brick Fanatics, the problem boils down to a “license conflict,” and the Lego Ideas website will notify you when an idea is submitted as an existing IP. Brick Fanatics also provides an example of what it looks like when you try other IPs, such as Mario Bros, which isn’t allowed due to an already existing collection, or Pokemon, which also has a license conflict, although in this case it’s because of Mega Construx (You may remember Mega Bloks) owns the rights to the block creation.
Fans have tried to get Zelda-themed suits through before, and some even made it to the review stage, but apparently they’ve all been turned down.
There are several possible reasons why submissions for The Legend of Zelda are no longer allowed. One reason that’s probably everyone’s favorite is that Lego and Nintendo are actually working together on something for the series, which isn’t surprising given the Mario set.
Another possibility is that a company like Mega Construx or others has the rights that LEGO knows behind the scenes and therefore doesn’t allow more creative sets to be placed on the site.
Or, it could just be that Nintendo made it clear that it doesn’t want to do a Zelda site, since there’s apparently been communication between the two companies about the Mario franchise. Maybe we’ll never know, although I personally wouldn’t mind adding LEGO Hyrule Castle to the collection.
