Hardly any feature causes more excitement in the Hunt Showdown community than a new map. According to the Hunt roadmap, 2024 will finally be the meantime fourth major open world appear.
We spoke to Dennis Schwarz, Hunt’s lead game designer, about the major project.
New biome is coming
»Maps are always huge. It’s like making a dozen maps for another game,” explains Schwarz. “There are different settlements and estates and so many different types of terrain that come together.”
In contrast to many other online shooters, maps in Hunt function like their own open worlds: there are often over ten locations (populated with zombies and monsters), such as farms, churches or villages, as well as a dense network of roads, interrupted by tunnels, lakes and small forests . And saloons, like here on DeSalle:

Schwarz doesn’t reveal any details about the new map, but: “I can say that it will be a new biome.” The swamp and steppe landscape of the previous three maps will definitely be expanded to include a new climate.
Farewell to the bayou? No!
“We don’t necessarily want to move away from the original bayou setting,” says Dennis Schwarz. Rather, they want to expand and supplement the scenario.
»On DeSalle, for example, there are areas that are more reminiscent of the swamp landscape, but there are also more dry zones. More mountains, more settlements like the Wild West-style towns or the mines.«
You’re always experimenting and finding ways to do it Anchor new maps and biomes in the shooter’s original setting can. »We want to stay true to our core vision and our roots lie in the bayou.«
There’s more to come!
It is already clear that the new hunt map will be a showcase project for the new engine – because that will coincide with the release of the map Engine upgrade to CryEngine version 5.11 completed.
New weather effects, so-called wildcards, will also play a decisive role in the future of Hunt, reveals Dennis Schwarz.

By the way, Crytek is also planning a new boss for 2024. It is still unclear whether it will be on the new map and what type of monster it will be.
In any case, Dennis Schwarz announces that they also want to continue pursuing the concept of mini-bosses in the open world (so-called wild targets). The crocodile Rotjaw will be the first wild target to appear in the open air in 2023.
