DOOM is one of the main forerunners of the FPS genre (First-person shooter) or first-person games. Any shooter you see today is directly or indirectly influenced by classic (and more modern) DOOM games. Without exception.
The franchise has known grow and adapt to new technologies without losing its essence. DOOM 2016 is a work of art with capital letters and the best FPS ever in the video game industry in my opinion. Pure DOOM essence, simple, gameplay of pure pleasure and visual and sound section (graphics, art and music) that you fall on your ass. You see it currently and it looks like it just came out.
In 2020 DOOM Eternal arrived, a very fun title that divided many players. Although it maintains the DOOM essence and the visual and sound section of its predecessor, the gameplay has become more complex and capricious. This factor was the one that made it not finish fitting some players. Many of us expected more from 2016.
In 2021, Bethesda announced a new video game in the franchise: Mighty DOOM, a title for iOS and Android devices. It was released in different territories. We have had to wait until 2023, specifically until March 21, to have it available in Google Play y Apple Store. The same day I received the notice that I could download it… And it has been my downfall!
Mighty DOOM: essence of DOOM embedded in a mobile game
I admit that my first reaction when I saw the ad for Mighty DOOM It was a disappointed sigh with a faint hope that it would at least be as cool as promised. “In the absence of a DOOM as such, the small Doomguy can serve as an intergame“, I thought. And I was wrong, because it’s cooler than I imagined.
The operation of Mighty DOOM it’s simple as a pacifier: linear stages full of enemies and a mini Doomguy who must slaughter all the demons while dodging attacks and firing automatically. Rollo Vampire Survivors, so that we understand each other. You can play it with one thumb, two at most.
It is a roguelike experience. As you clear stages, you can select one of three random abilities that stack up and make you that much deadlier. For example: shot in three directions. If later on you combine it with bouncing the shots off the walls… well, imagine the pifostio you mount in a moment.
every so often you find one boss phase, which is basically one of the normal enemies in a large version. The key of the game is know how to position and dodge enemy attacks. The matter of shooting is already handled by the little Doomguy. you can also do executions to recover life, use the rocket launcher and the chainsaw as special abilities, and use stage elements (portals, platforms…) to move faster. Currently, there are a total of 9 worlds, each with 40 stages.
The upgrades you select during matches they are lost when they die, but there is a permanent progression component: you can improve your Doomguy’s stats (life, damage, regeneration…) and level up both pieces of equipment and weapons. If you have multiple pieces in your inventory, you can merge them together to make a more powerful one. During the games you will get coins and gems, weapons, armor and upgrade tokens.
you can choose between four mini Doomguys or Slayers, each with a special passive ability and their independent progression. One is free and the other three are paid. I have no doubt that they will put more dolls in the future. The standard Doomguy has a chance to kill instantly to an enemy.
Essence of DOOM… and mobile gaming
As wonderful as it seems to me Mighty DOOM, it is still a mobile game with all that this implies: a store with the possibility of buying coins, gems, keys for boxes and special packs, and it also has ads. The monetization system is not abusive or too invasive. The daily missions and what you get during the games is enough to progress little by little.
It is possible to play without investing a penny… although the cool Doomguys are paid. Obvious. On the other hand, you can watch an ad a minute or two to resurrect once per round and to unlock some boxes that include everything from currency to equipment. Obviously, the more expensive, the better loot. Nothing new.
My only real negative is the Power system, which ends up limiting the gaming experience during the longest sessions. As I said, it is a mobile game with all that that implies. It wasn’t all going to be massacres, shootings and more “DOOMesque” stuff.
Mighty DOOM It is a very fun and tremendously addictive game. Although it is not what we fans of the franchise expected, it is not bad to play a few games casually. The plus side is that now you can keep busting demons anywhere, even if the Nintendo Switch runs out of battery! It’s free, so at least give it a try.
