If you’re looking for a (very) strong dose of nostalgia, the newly released side-scrolling action game The Karate Kid: Street Fight should do the trick.
Got a classic 80s movie that you need to make a video game based on, but don’t want to go too far in terms of imagination? Make a fighting game! That’s exactly what GameMill Entertainment has announced for The Karate Kid: Street Fighter, a new 16-bit-style (keyword being style) game that turns the 80s classic into a genre staple of the era. According to IGN, the game will let you play as Daniel Russo, Mr. Miyagi, Kumiko, or Ali Mills, and you’ll be able to take on villains from the series, including Johnny Lawrence, John Kreese, Terry Silver, and more. The game also specifically mentions that it’s set in the 1980s, though that seems pretty pointless given everything else about the game.
The game clearly takes cues from more modern fighting games, like 2022’s generally well-received Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge. You can check out the trailer for Street Fighter above, and it looks pretty much like your standard fighting game. Perhaps the full game will offer more, but it doesn’t seem like it’ll have much to do beyond colorful sprites.

You’ll be able to play it yourself soon, though, as it’s set to release in a few months on September 20. You’ll also have plenty of choice when it comes to platf orms, as it’ll be available on PS4, PS5, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC (via Steam). Judging by the list of bad guys listed, it covers at least the first three movies, so if you want to revisit those movies, or even experience them for the first time (which is a weird thing to do), you’ll find the right guys there, too.
