House of the Dragon Season 2 is finally coming to theaters next week… the only problem is, you now have to pay more money to watch it.
The promise of streaming services was that they were a cheaper alternative to cable TV, letting you watch whatever you wanted, whenever you wanted, and without commercials. Over time, they also started producing original shows and movies. But now, nearly every streaming service has a plan that costs the same as what you originally paid, now with commercials, and the price you now pay for no commercials seems to be rising at the whim of the executives involved. This time, the top brass at Warner Bros. decided to raise the cost of its streaming service Max, formerly known as HBO Max.

That’s right, starting today, if you’re on the ad-free monthly plan, you’ll have to pay an extra dollar per month, bringing your cost up from $16 to $17 per month (via Deadline). If you’re on the annual plan, it was previously $150, but will now cost you $170, an increase of $20 per year (which works out to $14 per month, so it’s still cheaper than the new $17 per month). If you don’t mind watching some ads, you’ll still have to pay $10 per month or $100 per year, so don’t worry, you can still enjoy House of the Dragon Season 2 just as much as before.
It does feel a bit dodgy that Warner Bros. is raising its fees, since we’re less than two weeks away from the second season of House of the Dragon (easily the streaming service’s biggest show of the year). So if you’re desperate to watch both the Game of Thrones spinoff and other upcoming shows like The Penguin, you’ll have to pay a dollar less per month.
