Netflix could have received the rights to adapt a cult game series from a renowned studio. However, an unfortunate combination of circumstances derailed these promising plans.
That’s exactly what Paul Tassi suggests in a new report from Forbes. If we are to believe what he says, Netflix was thinking about adapting the Destiny games into an animated series. This would all go back to 2022, when Bungie’s situation was very different.
A Netflix series like Destiny has been turned on its head
Netflix is known to love adapting video games into animated series, and most of them are of very high quality. You only have to look at the excellent productions Arcane: League of Legends and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners to be convinced. So the inclusion of an animated series inspired by the Destiny franchise in the catalog could have had some appeal.
In 2022, things were clearly on the right track in this area. Bungie was in talks with Netflix at the time to see what turn such an adaptation could take. Both parties even seemed to be quite advanced and were discussing possible scenario ideas. Unfortunately, all of that changed when Bungie lost its independence again after being acquired by Sony that same year. If there is an adaptation of Destiny, it would therefore be under the leadership of Sony Pictures. Therefore, the grass was cut out from under Netflix. Hopes for this project were finally dashed in 2023. The studio then hired a former Warner Bros. executive. with the goal of expanding the Destiny franchise beyond pure video game media.
Another light of hope for destiny?
However, despite all these developments, the idea of adapting Destiny into a series has not yet seen the light of day, whether it is produced by Netflix, Sony Pictures or anyone else. Other PlayStation franchises should take priority for film or television production. We think in particular of God of War, a priori on the Prime Video side, or even Horizon, this time on the Netflix side.
Even if Destiny won’t be entitled to an adaptation anytime soon, Bungie is far from finished with this license. Final Form, the next major expansion of the second work, will actually be released on June 4th. After that, a sequel may be in the works, in addition to the return of Marathon, the Halo creators’ first love. Fate can sometimes play very strange tricks on us.
