- The “Arsène Lupine” books are the breeding ground for “Lupine” on Netflix.
- For the police officer Youssef Guedira, Inspector Ganimard serves as a model.
- Find out from us how the iconic figure for “Lupine” is getting an update.
In the terrific thriller series “Lupin” on Netflix loves master thief Assane Diop (Omar Sy) the novels about “Arsène Lupine”. Diop follows the same ethics as the most famous thief in French literature and does not kill.
The tricky disguises and dizzying deceptions also come directly from the “Arsène Lupine” books by the French author Maurice Leblanc – of course for the Netflix series slightly modified and modernized.
And yet another, extremely important aspect of the novels have been built into “Lupine” by the Netflix series makers: the policeman and Lupine fan Youssef Guedira (Soufiane Guerrab) becomes Arsène Lupin’s icoic adversary Inspector Ganimard.
Who is Inspector Ganimard in the “Arsène Lupine” novels?
In the “Arsène Lupine” books, Inspector Ganimard is the most persistent and persistent pursuer of gentleman crook Arsène Lupine. In one never ending game of cat and mouse Ganimard tries to convict Lupine – only so that Arsène Lupine cleverly evades arrest or breaks out of prison at the last moment.
As in “Lupine” on Netflix, hunters and hunted get to know each other in the course of this persecution and respect and appreciation for one another grow. Assane Diop also seems to find the policeman Guedira very sympathetic in “Lupine”. But in episode 6 he also explains: “I don’t work with cops.”
“Ganimard” Youssef Guedira is a real “Lupine” super fan
Policeman Guedira already spies on Assane Diop at the end of “Lupine” Part 1: Against the resistance of his colleagues, he sticks to his imaginative and correct “Lupine” -fantheories and recognizes Assane’s famous raids on the character of the novel Stealing the Queen’s necklace.
At the very end of Part 1, “Ganimard” Guedira can find Assane Diop. In the coastal town of Étretat he stands across from him and speaks to him “Lupin”
Later, in episode 6 of Part 2 of “Lupine”, Assane returns the favor and explains to Guedira: “You are my Ganimard.” A huge compliment to the cop who has to smile. After all, after his rescue, he explains Assane’s son Raoul (Etan Simon) that Ganimard is his favorite character from the “Arsène Lupine” novels, because he is “a cop like me.”
But even in “Lupine” on Netflix, Assane Diop has the upper hand when it comes down to it: For example, he knows “Ganimard” Guedira’s true identity, ties the policeman to the car and steals his police ID, which he then uses can steal a getaway car.
Later the police discovered the hiding place of Assane Diop and Guedira admired some “Lupine” fan articles or -Easter eggs like the “Jewish lamp” and the iconic cylinder by Arsène Lupinewho have favourited Assane in his apartment. Guedira’s colleagues acknowledge his admiration with the words: “Look at it like a child.”
But the most wonderful “Arsène Lupine” fan moment of the series occurs when the villain and Pellegrini henchman Leonard (Adama Niane) tries to trap Assane in episode 6 and sends him text messages from his son Raoul’s cell phone. Assane recognizes what is going on and sends back: “Let’s do it like Lupine with his daughter in Cagliostro.”
“Ganimard” Guedira immediately notices the deliberate mistake von Assane and says: “Not true. It is not Lupin’s daughter. It is his son.” Whereupon Assane asks appreciatively: “A fan of Lupine?”
Here the plot of the novel “The Countess of Cagliostro or The Youth of Arsene Lupine” is alluded to, which only real “Lupine” superfans like Assane, his son Raoul or Youssef Guedira know.
In the already confirmed 3rd season of the Netflix series this rivalry is sure to keep picking up speed and playing an increasingly prominent role.
