It’s only been a month since Furiosa: The Mad Max Saga was released in theaters, but it looks like it’s already hitting digital storefronts.
Mad Max: Fury Road is the first new Mad Max movie in nearly a decade, but to the surprise of viewers who know nothing about the history of the franchise, the movie has not performed very well at the box office. The prequel movie had a budget of approximately $168 million, but has only grossed a little over $160 million to date. While Mad Max: Fury Road, which brought Furiosa into the film’s post-apocalyptic world, performed relatively well at the box office, it also technically generated a net loss, so historically, the genre has not performed very well. Now, according to online reports, Amazon has listed Mad Max: Fury Road as a movie that will be released digitally on June 24.

It’s common practice to release movies digitally soon after their release, especially if they don’t do well at the box office, but this did hurt Furiosa’s ability to regain momentum over the summer. Furiosa opened in theaters on May 24, so that meant it had to wait a full month before it was available on digital platforms. That’s a bit of a shame, especially given the critical acclaim it received – our Fran loved it, even if it occasionally felt a little bloated.

This of course leaves the question of what the future holds for the Mad Max franchise. It’s unclear if we’ll ever see another movie in the franchise, but based on comments from Fury Road star Tom Hardy, it seems unlikely. In a recent interview with Forbes, when asked about potential future projects like the rumored Mad Max: The Wasteland, Hardy responded bluntly, “I don’t think that’s going to happen.” It’s also possible that Warner Bros. decides to be merciful and give director George Miller another try, but for now we’ll just have to wait and see.
