The rumor mill can finally stop churning. 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey has now been officially introduced as the cover star for Madden NFL 2025.
When McCaffrey began his career with the Carolina Panthers, he was considered to be permanently injured for a long time. For example, immediately after his contract extension with the Panthers in 2020, he was seriously injured in the second game of the season, was out for several weeks, and was injured again in his first game after the illness and had to end the season early. But since his move to the San Francisco 49ers in 2022, he has earned a reputation as one of the best offensive players in the NFL. At the 2024 Super Bowl, however, he and his team narrowly lost to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Of course, not all football fans agree with EA’s choice. However, disagreements on this matter are now as much a part of the franchise as field goals and touchdowns. Many would have preferred to see Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson on the cover of the football game, for example.
In addition, it is considered a rather dubious honor for players to be chosen as a Madden cover star. Many of McCaffrey’s predecessors are said to have suffered serious injuries in the season following their appearance on Madden, and some even had to end their careers.

Statistically speaking, the running back should be fine. It is true that an above-average number of cover stars have been plagued by injuries, but that is certainly also because the players chosen are ordinary players who are at the peak of their careers. After that, things can only go downhill and, unfortunately, injuries are a daily occurrence in professional football anyway.
Madden NFL 25 will be released on August 13th for PC, PlayStation 4&5 and XBox Series X|S.
