Fans of the open-world action series Mafia may finally be able to look forward to supplies again, because the fourth part of the franchise may now be in the works.
Several years have passed since the release of Mafia III in 2016 and how the franchise will continue is largely unclear. In any case, there hasn’t been an official announcement of a new part to date, but if you believe a new report, the fourth game in the successful action series could now be in the works.
Developer Hangar 13 worked for 2K Games on the last part Mafia III; the studio subsequently developed a remaster of the original game for modern consoles in 2020 with Mafia: Definitive Edition. According to Kotaku’s mostly well-informed colleagues, the studio has remained loyal to the brand ever since.
Reported on the departure of studio head Haden Blackman, who was replaced by Nick Baynes my box citing unspecified sources that Baynes would also direct work on the next mafia game.
Details on such a fourth mafia title are still few and far between, but internally it is said to be codenamed Nero and be developed on the basis of the new Unreal Engine 5. Should the title be confirmed in this form, we should therefore expect an opulent next-gen experience; a release for PS4 and Xbox One will probably be ruled out at the same time.
Even if it is the fourth main part of Mafia, it should also be a prequel to the previous parts. Since the first part was played in the 1930s, Mafia II in the 1940s and 1950s and Mafia III in the 1960s, Mafia 4 could possibly pick up on the times in the 1920s.
Whether and by when an official confirmation of the story can be expected remains to be seen; the development work on Hangar 13 is said to be at a very early stage.
