The next magic set, Ikoria: Realm of the Behemoths, is all about putting together the most terrifying monsters – by muting and training them as you wish. Today we present a preview card to help you with this: The collar fright mentor.
Frillscare mentor
Creature – Human WarriorWhen Frillscare Mentor enters the battlefield, put a menace counter on target non-Human creature you control. (It can't be blocked except by two or more creatures)
(2 neutral & 1 red mana, tap card): Put a + 1 / + 1 counter on each creature you control with menace.
Fortune favors the ferocious.
This card shows one of Ikoria's most important new mechanics, the keyword brands. Similar to how + 1 / + 1 counters increase a creature's power, you can now distribute counters that give different abilities like Threat in this case. This ability is linked to the brand, so it stays on the target creature if the collar fright mentor leaves the field herself.
So far, Magic used mostly brands that had no effect in themselves and that were only used by certain abilities on the cards. For example, various artifacts were loaded with charge tags and then used up for their own effects. With the keyword brands, the effect is inherent in the brands themselves, regardless of which creature they land on. To keep the overview, Ikoria will have cardboard markers that represent the various key words.
Ikoria will be released later than expected due to the corona pandemic, the set has been moved from April 24th to May 15th. But online it comes out much earlier: You can get started in Magic Online and MtG Arena on April 16.
