The Magic: The Gathering crossover train shows no signs of stopping. The next stop is Final Fantasy, and some seriously beautiful cards are about to get on board.
Earlier this week, Wizards of the Coast revealed its latest Magic collaboration, Final Fantasy, a franchise that feels a bit late to the game. Not just its popularity, but also the fantasy elements both games have to offer. It won’t surprise you at all when you hear and see that the first card shown in the series features Sephiroth descending from the sky with a sword ready to stab a mysterious man off-screen, which of course is morbid as hell, But at least you can create some really cool card art.
It’s worth noting that big names like Cloud are absent, but I’m sure such a character will get a card and it’s just waiting in the wings. What we have is a very well delivered moogle, Final Fantasy 6’s Kefka, Tidus and Yuna sharing a very tender kiss (congrats to the Tidus x Yuna shippers), Lightning from Final Fantasy XIII and Emmett Selki from Final Fantasy XIV. “Throughout the series, you’ll see artwork from Magic artists and classic illustrations from legendary Final Fantasy artists, as well as new and stunning pieces created specifically for the series,” said lead designer Mark Rosewater (thanks Polygon) said.

The announcement also brings the big news that all Universes Beyond releases, sets based on collaborations like Final Fantasy or previously released titles like Hatsune Miku and Stranger Things, will now be available on all formats is legal, so your shiny new Saphiro card won’t just be in a binder you look at once in a while.
The Final Fantasy x Magic: The Gathering collaboration is currently set to release on June 13, 2025, so you’ll have to wait a while, followed by the Spider-Man series as the next Beyondverse series.
