Hundreds of games for a low monthly fee: With this offer, the Xbox Game Pass wants to attract players to the subscription. However, prices have been rising significantly recently. After a price increase in September 2023, the Game Pass is now becoming more expensive again. We therefore asked you whether you want to continue using the subscription or whether you want to cancel it in the meantime.
What is actually changing?
The prices for all variants of the Game Pass will be increased for new customers with immediate effect:
- Xbox Game Pass Ultimate: Now costs 18 dollars per month instead of 15 dollars
- PC Game Pass: Now costs 12 instead of 10 dollars per month
- Xbox Game Pass Core: The annual subscription now costs 70 instead of 60 dollars
For existing customers, the price change will only take place on 12. September 2024.
In addition, the basic version of the Xbox Game Pass will be replaced by a new model called Xbox Game Pass Standard, which costs 15 dollars per month. This includes the Game Pass library including multiplayer access, but no day-one releases. You can find all the details about the changes here:
What do you think about it
For most of you, the price increases are too much. A total of 44 percent (518 votes) in our survey said they no longer want to use the Game Pass. In contrast, 34 percent (402 votes) want to keep their subscription. Only 22 percent (255 votes) of you are still unsure whether you want to use the subscription even at a higher price.
Of course, we also took a look at the comments to find out why you decided to do so. For example, Bumsfallera found out through a Steam tool that we recently introduced that the subscription is not worth it for him:
When there was this article recently about the total amount of money spent on Steam, I calculated that I’ve spent an average of $12 per month on games over the last few years. That’s less than the subscription costs. And I can play the games whenever I want and don’t have to worry about them being removed from the subscription. So for me personally, the subscription isn’t a good deal.
Subscriptions are no longer an option for prosumers either, although not necessarily for cost reasons:
I tried the Gamepass for 1, 2 months and immediately noticed how a Rush through
and I have much less appreciation for the games and I abandon things that I actually liked a little. Not my thing. I’d rather pay full price and have studio support and get exactly what I want.
MariusW, on the other hand, shares the opinion of many other comments. For him, the Game Pass is still worthwhile because he does not use it as a permanent subscription:
I think it’s still worth it. You don’t sign up for something like that as a permanent subscription, do you? You sign up for a month or two every now and then and then you play the interesting things that have accumulated up to that point in one go. This method is still drastically cheaper than buying the newer games directly at the new price.
Opinions on the Game Pass vary widely. If you are still one of those who are hesitant about continuing the subscription, you can find all the games that will be joining or leaving the Game Pass in June in our overview above. Perhaps we can make your decision easier.
Whether you buy or subscribe, we will no longer be able to access some games at some point, for example because the publisher shuts down the servers. But resistance is now forming in the form of the initiative Stop Killing Games
