We recently commented that Marvel Rivals introduced a very good reference to Captain America: Civil War. Emma Frost, one of the last additions, asks winter soldier about the words that are repeated in her head … the same ones that are pronounced in Russian during the film to “activate the murderer”, for calling it somehow.
It turns out that my curiosity for these words did not end there. I discovered two things after investigating by various media, Reddit and other forums: that the origin of this series of words is very disappointing and that fans created a very crazy theory that established connections with the rest of the Marvel film universe.
The scriptwriters of Captain America: Civil WarChristopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, they already said years ago in a interview for cinemablend that they do not have an intentional meaning and that intentionality was always the loudness of them, that they look good in the film. And while they got it, this reason disappointed the fans.
They are rhythmic and mysterious. I don't remember if we listen to them in Russian to check if they sounded intimidating enough, surely. Because they were very melodic; I am not sure that we would have chosen them. […] When you make so many films, everyone looks for connections, it is natural to think: “My God, they have everything under control, and everything has a meaning!” And often it means something, but not always. […] That is also part of grace. Sometimes, unintentionally, you can create a connection and then play with it, even if it was not your original intention! In this … it simply is not.
But it doesn't matter, because the community He was responsible for elaborating a theory that gave meaning and connection to each of the words. The most repeated source among fans is Half Bustlewhich made a compilation of the most consistent and interesting meanings. According to the general consensus (more or less), words mean the following.
- Longing It could symbolize the deep feelings of Nostalgia from Bucky. The lost time and the desire to meet your friend, Steve.
- Rusty He would refer to his physical appearance, since Hydra's experiments caused him not to age.
- Oven He could refer to the origin of his arm and/or the place where they experienced with him. Remember that they were Nazis.
- Sunrise Like his new life as an agent of Hydra after “dying.”
- Seventeen He would refer to his year of birth, 1917.
- Benigno It seems to be related to Bucky himself before listening to this sequence that activates his murderous mode.
- Nine It could be a wink to the number of Hydra heads.
- Return home (Homecoming) would be a advance of Spider-Man, Spider-Man: Homecoming.
- Aas a single and lonely agent of Hydra.
- Load car It represents the last place in which he was “dying” in Captain America: the first avenger.
While it is not the most solid theory of the UCM, it cannot be denied that the meaning of some words makes enough sense. Although there is a much more interesting and less accepted general sense because it is not so exciting: all words represent things and concepts that scientists had at hand after questioning Bucky and while doing the experiments. Personally, I am left with the latter despite Marvel's statements.
