Marvel vs. Marvel players are crazy about Jeff the Shark

Crazy, Jeff, Marvel, players, shark

Marvel Rivals burst onto the public scene with its invite-only beta, drawing players in and bringing combat to a genre still dominated by Overwatch 2 (albeit with its many issues). But NetEase seems to have a trick up its sleeve to get more people interested in the comic-book-based third-person shooter: Jeff. He’s a little land shark wearing an adorable little collar, and he’s taking the game by storm.

Announced at San Diego Comic-Con this past weekend, Jeff is now playable in Marvel Rivals for those lucky enough to be invited. He originally debuted in West Coast Avengers in 2016, but he has since become a favorite among comic book fans, appearing alongside Deadpool, Kate Bishop, and more.

Jeff plays as a support character in Marvel Showdown, healing teammates and using an activatable stealth skill to quickly traverse the map. His ultimate skill is pretty disgusting, though, allowing the player to devour enemy players in a large area and then spit them out to a nearby selected area. He looks very powerful, which only adds to his appeal.

While I may not have had much resonance with Marvel Versus following its preview earlier this year, the game has won over many Overwatch fans and Marvel fans alike. Some, including one of our own writers, Fran, have suggested that the game harkens back to Overwatch’s earlier, more glorious past. Whichever way you end up debating, it’s always good to have competitors duke it out in the same genre, lest complacency set in.

It’d also be cool to see more niche characters appear in Marvel Versus. While characters like the Punisher and the Hulk are must-sees, Jeff and Penny Parker aren’t huge names in the minds of the average Marvel fan (except maybe for the Spider-Man movies), so it would be nice to see them get a little more time on the big stage.
