Game news Marvel’s Midnight Suns: Firaxis Unveils 20 Minutes of Annotated Gameplay With Wolverine and SaberTooth
2K Games and Firaxis had given us an appointment tonight for a first presentation of Marvel’s Midnight Suns gameplay through a fight between Wolverine, The Hunter and SaberTooth. The opportunity to learn more and see the title turnaround.
First, the teams made it clear that the gameplay was recorded on the PC version of Marvel’s Midnight Suns that is expected in March 2022 on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series and Switch. Then, and for 20 minutes, Producer Caroline Guevara, Creative Director Jake Solomon and Senior Franchise Producer Garth DeAngelis presented and commented three game sequences
A first look at battles, cards and their effects
We first notice that The Hunter has to borrow dimensional portals in order to reach the next mission, after which a battle begins. This is how we discover the interface, back to the card system announced at gamescom. Indeed, when a lot of mechanics come here the experience of Firaxis on XCOM, the tactical battles of Marvel’s Midnight Suns are played through a system of cards and deck building and in that sense Firaxis breaks away from its iconic license. Some cards allow you to perform local or zone attacks, others trigger effects, while another card type is for the special abilities of the characters.
A very present tactical gameplay, but an advanced RPG aspect
However, you need to be careful because the number of cards that can be used is limited on every corner, and that will cost. It is up to the players to manage this aspect, build their decks accordingly, and use the right cards at the right time. The first sequence shown shows the hunter attacking an enemy in order to push him back to two others so that Dr. Strange can use his special ability as effectively as possible. Regrettably, Deck construction was not on the program of the presentation, we will therefore have to wait a little longer to see how it goes in practice. Then we were spoiled with a cutscene, which allowed the entry into the scene of Wolverine and SaberTooth, the big piece of the evening.
The abbey: operations center and social center
The developers took the opportunity to point this out the emphasis has been placed on the narrative and that it will be present during both the cutscenes and the game phases. During this confrontation, we were able to observe differences in the capacities, the playback of the title, the size of the playing area, but also the use of the environment. We were finally taken away at the side of the abbey, the operations center of the group of superheroes. As announced, it will be a place where we can chat with other characters through the control of The Hunter, in particular through Multiple choice dialogues, but also improve your skills, equipment, work on your deck or even explore the area.
Firaxis gave us an appointment in October to learn more about the characters and gameplay of Marvel’s Midnight Suns.
