With so many great games constantly arriving in stores, it is practically impossible to get bored these days, as impressive titles of all kinds of genres and for all platforms are constantly coming out. Even so, I am one of those who occasionally feels like playing them. look back and remember old times with great classics that have made me have great moments and enjoy games that still remain in my memory.
Over the last few days I have spent several moments away from home and one of the titles that has accompanied me while I have been traveling has been Blast Corpsone of the greatest gems he published Rare More than 25 years ago, in 1997 to be exact, and one of the last works developed for a Nintendo console, in which once again the amazing quality to which the company has always accustomed us was maintained.
Without a doubt, it is undeniable that several essential Rare games were released on the legendary 64-bit machine from the big N, this being one of them and that you have the opportunity to play it whenever you want if you are subscribed to the expansion pack of Nintendo Switch Online. Despite having the original version in my collection, I took advantage of its availability in this digital library to have it closer at hand, which made me remember why I have such fond memories of it and what made me so frustrated.
The premise of this action game is very simple, as it tells us that A red truck carrying nuclear bombs It is constantly moving and cannot be stopped in any way. The situation is so dangerous that the slightest contact could cause a chain reaction that would cause these containers to explode instantly, reducing everything around them to ashes, which means failing the mission and having to repeat it.
That is, each of the dozens of stages that are unlocked have a hidden timer that is actually marked by the speed at which this dangerous truck moves. The path it follows is practically a straight line, so you have to clear a path by destroying any building or element that could cause such a fateful collision, so it is somewhat ironic that you want to avoid the explosion by destroying everything nearby.
But of course, if you do it yourself, it’s not so bad. In fact, you could say that it’s even a somewhat satisfying experience, because seeing how the buildings are falling down and you smash them to pieces, with explosions and effects in between, is something that as you go through the levels you want to do in an increasingly wild way. For this you have access to a wide variety of vehiclesincluding an excavator, a small racing car, a motorcycle that launches missiles, and also some robots in the form of mechas that cause brutal havoc.
Each vehicle or machine is controlled in a different way, which at the same time implies that they do not have the same functions and, therefore, can cause the difficulty increases even more or becomes more affordableFor example, one of the trucks is only effective if you drift and hit buildings or obstacles with its rear end, but getting the turn right can be very tricky and sometimes even a bit frustrating. In fact, these screens have always been the ones I have found most difficult by far, and to this day I still have a huge dislike for them.
In addition, in each phase you are forced to pilot a specific vehicle or mech, including another truck that needs ammunition to destroy everything in its path with its side hatches that protrude and collapse, just as the motorcycle needs missiles to be effective. Still, it is not enough to simply destroy buildings as if there were no tomorrow, because in reality The game has its share of puzzles having to figure out how you can quickly clear paths without destroying the entire stage.
This means that sometimes you have to drag explosives, drive trains to transport vehicles, use cranes to move materials, take control of a boat to navigate a river, etc. Adding all these details together makes the experience more exciting. Addictive and stressful in equal partsbecause the tension that this game has always generated in me is brutal, since there is always an arrow in sight that indicates the direction of the truck with the nuclear bombs, whose color changes the closer it is to colliding with something.
As if that weren’t enough, the themes of the soundtrack, which is admittedly simply outstanding, speed up if you are close to failing the mission. The difficulty does increase, however, which is noticeable considerably, but never to the point of being unfair or impossible. However, certain stages require a huge effort and sometimes a bit of trial and error until finding the best route or the most effective way to perform certain tasks.
Beyond all this, the title has another factor that makes you even more hooked and even gives it a good touch of replayability. The reason is that each phase has Gold, silver and bronze medals depending on how quickly you complete the main objective and also by carrying out other secondary tasks, such as lighting up the lights around the stage, saving all the citizens or locating devices that unlock secondary levels. These are mini-games against the clock to destroy certain structures or complete several laps on a circuit in the shortest time possible.
In the long run, it’s easy to spend a good handful of hours at the controls. Especially since after completing a good part of the main campaign, it’s time to travel around the galaxy, so the challenges keep appearing and becoming real challenges for those looking to reach 100%. One day I have to try it, but for now I’m content with having relived the wonderful era that left Blast Corps after its passage through Nintendo 64.
