Not only are cookies eaten in December, it’s also the perfect time to reflect on the past year. Metacritic is using the end of the year to once again select the ten biggest pickles in the video game industry. And there was a lot to choose from this year.
Many video game fans will remember 2023 as an absurdly brilliant year. One highlight followed the next, there was hardly any time to take a breather. But what is often overlooked is that there have been more than enough cucumbers in the past few months.

Of course, the review aggregator Metacritic comes in handy here, as the ten worst games of the year were once again chosen here. All titles that were published by December 18, 2023 were eligible for selection. They must also have received at least seven reviews from professional publications. Those responsible want to prevent completely niche titles from ending up on the list. The lowest rated platform version was also taken into account.
However, you shouldn’t expect any big surprises. Flop 10 is led by The Lord of the Rings: Gollum. No wonder, after all, the game not only caused a huge shitstorm, it also caused Daedalic to be closed. What’s a bit strange is that Skull Island: Rise of Kong isn’t represented. There were simply not enough reviews here and so it fell off the list. We have nevertheless linked our gaming session to you under this news.
But now enough of the preamble, below you will find the worst video games of 2023 according to Metacritic, including their average rating:
- The Lord of the Rings: Gollum – 34
- Flashback 2 – 35
- Greyhill Incident – 38
- Amount of Error – 40
