The end of Internet Explorer is imminent. On June 15, 2022, Microsoft wants to pull the plug on the outdated browser. However, according to Eric Van Aelstyn, Product Marketing Manager of Microsoft Edge, you shouldn’t wait until the browser is switched off, but take action yourself beforehand.
in one Blogpost he is the headline on Microsoft’s Windows IT Pro blog Don’t wait until June 15th! Set your own IE retirement date.
He wants to make the few remaining users of the outdated browser aware that it will soon be deactivated and gives instructions on what to do in preparation for a new browser.
The post is primarily aimed at companies that still use Internet Explorer, as there are probably sites that depend on Microsoft’s old browser. Microsoft Edge seems to be the solution
According to Microsoft Edge Product Marketing Manager, switching from Internet Explorer to Microsoft Edge is a good solution for businesses. That doesn’t sound surprising at first, but Van Aelstyn also gives a good reason for it: The Edge browser has a so-called IE mode, i.e. Internet Explorer mode, which can also display pages that were previously dependent on the old browser .
This allows companies to use the newer, faster and more secure Edge browser while still accessing the pages that actually require Explorer. To ensure a smooth transition, the Microsoft employee also reveals how companies import their data from Internet Explorer to Edge:
- Opens the Edge browser
- Copy the following text into the URL bar: edge://settings/importData
- Chooses
Microsoft Internet Explorer
as a source
Your data will be exported from the old browser to the new one. Even if you want to switch from Internet Explorer to another browser like Google Chrome, you can take your bookmarks, settings and passwords with you. Then you proceed as follows:
- Opens the Chrome browser
- Click the three-dot menu at the top
- Then you get up Bookmarks -> Import Bookmarks and Settings
- Choose the Internet Explorer out of
- Click
Import
