Redfall by Arkane Austin Obviously this was a serious failure, but Matt Booty, head of Xbox Game Studios, said we don’t need to worry about the studio going out of business.
As reviews of Arkane’s latest game, Redfall, a four-player co-op vampire-hunting shooter, began in early May, it quickly became apparent that the game wasn’t in great shape. Our own review gave it 3/5 stars, and with so many studios closing over the past year, it’s fair to worry that Arkane Austin might be shut down for not living up to expectations. Thankfully, that’s not the case, as Booty clarified in a recent interview with Axios. When asked if fans wanted the studio to remain open, Booty replied: “That’s the current plan. They’re working hard to update and continue the Redfall content.”
Booty also noted that he felt he had failed to properly set the expectations that Redfall needed as a first-party game, saying, “I feel a responsibility to make us do better with Arkane.” Responsible for the state of the game released last month, apologizing to players of Redfall for the game they ended up playing and promising further updates.
According to Booty, though, Redfall might not be as bad as you think, and says it’s getting “good performance” through Xbox Game Pass. “It was a miss, but how big was it? I want to support them in continuing to work hard and deliver the game they had in mind.” Of course, Booty didn’t reveal numbers, but that’s the way the streaming model works these days.
A report earlier this month shed light on Redfall’s development, painting a very chaotic picture, claiming that many staff members didn’t even want to make the game, and that the project lacked a clear direction.
