2016 Microsoft It stopped reporting sales figures for the Xbox One, but the company’s most recent filing confirms that the console’s sales are minuscule compared to the PS4.
If you remember the early days of the Xbox One, they were a bit of a disaster due to some bad decisions early on (admittedly quickly backed up), and Microsoft stopped reporting sales figures three years after its 2016 release. But now, as The Verge reports, in some filings with Brazil’s national competition watchdog, Microsoft admits that the Xbox One’s sales figures are less than half that of the PS4.
“Sony has surpassed Microsoft in console sales and installed base, and more than doubled Microsoft’s sales on the previous generation of Xbox,” Microsoft said, translated from Portuguese by The Verge.
Sony recently announced that it no longer plans to announce PS4 sales, resulting in final lifetime sales of 117.2 million units as of March, making it the fourth-best-selling console of all time. That means total Xbox One sales of just under 58,600,000 units, which matches the console’s estimated sales figures.
Plus, the Nintendo Switch has sold around 111 million units, not far off the PS4’s figure and apparently double the Xbox One’s. However, Switch sales are down about 20% due to a shortage of components, meaning its sales pace may not continue until the chip shortage is resolved.
These same files also contain a statement from Microsoft that sony Some sort of “blocking right” is allegedly being paid to keep games out of Xbox Game Pass. It’s unclear what that actually means, as it could just be because PlayStation now has its own version of Game Pass, or it could be part of a publishing contract.
