According to a report from The Verge, Microsoft has knocked off its $1 Game Pass subscription record.
The promotion, which allowed first-time subscribers to enjoy the benefits of the service at a much lower price, has been canceled in favor of other options for future folks interested in Game Pass. We have yet to see what these will be.
“We’ve discontinued our previous introductory offers for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass, and are evaluating different marketing promotions for new members going forward,” Kari Perez, head of communications at Xbox, told The Verge.
As for why Xbox made this decision…it’s hard to say, of course. However, it’s likely they’ve decided they can get more from their original subscribers than a mere dollar, even if it does mean they lose out on pretty compelling marketing material when they walk away.
Or, indeed, there are many people who use this deal to simply get a free AAA game, basically for free, and then never touch the service again. Back in 2019, a few friends and I made some small changes to everyone when Gears 5 was released. anecdote? Sure, but haven’t touched the service since, and what a steal it turned out to be.
It’s worth noting how popular the service is right now, and how it’s selling itself through word of mouth and big releases on monthly subscriptions. Maybe it’s a shift in strategy from “Come on, give Game Pass a chance” to something else that’s more reflective of the quantity and quality of Game Pass. Frankly, they could bump up the original sub price to $10, which sucks, but you can still recommend it to your friends.
But what do you think? Do you mourn losing your $1 Game Pass? Did you do what I did and cash it out for a single AAA release? Also, what do you think it will be replaced with? Let us know below!
