The various services of Microsoft are an integral part of the Windows operating system. But not everyone is used accordingly. For example, while the browser Microsoft Edge is more left-wing by many users, many use the Cloud service Onedrive. Due to a weak point, the use could now prove to be a disadvantage.
Security researcher from Oasis Security have found that a tool called File Picker unintentionally gives access to all your data that are stored in OneDrive. File Picker actually serves as an interface if you want to select and share a file from OneDrive via an external application or website. For this process, the tool requires full access to all files in the OneDrive account, even if you only want to release a single file.
Refuse access
According to the security experts, a file sharing must be given by you when using File Picker, but it is not clearly evident that this includes a comprehensive authorization. Have recently shared file from Onedrive about programs such as Slack or Trello, Chatgpt, they could already have access to your data. The data access of artificial intelligence is particularly questionable. Chatgpt could get personal information about you that you actually don't want to share.
By checking the authorization, you can withdraw it again. In your Microsoft account under “Data Protection and Safety”, look at which applications have access to your data. You can then easily remove the access rights if necessary.
If you want to check whether File Picker is used by software or website, a practical test helps. If you are asked to provide access rights when sharing a file from OneDrive, File Picker is used. Better let the process stay. The security researchers from Oasis Security have already informed Microsoft about the weak point. So there should soon be a solution to the problem. Then you can share data again as usual.
