Microsoft’s internal studio is moving from Xbox One Title and develop new games specifically for Xbox Series X/S.
Matt Booty, head of Xbox Game Studios, broke the news of the shift to Axios.
Microsoft says it will still support Xbox One hardware and games like Minecraft and Sea of Thieves. It will also give Xbox One users the option to play Xbox Series X/S games on the platform via the cloud.
Microsoft Game Studios currently has 23 game studios, including those acquired through the 2021 purchase of ZeniMax Media.
Xbox Series X/S was released in 2020. When it was announced in 2019, Microsoft said that its 15 Xbox game studios were developing the “largest and most innovative lineup of Xbox exclusive games” in its history. At least a year after X/S launched, there was no intention of making a Gen-9 exclusive game.
Nearly three years later, it’s kept that promise, but now, the company will focus on developing games for the current generation.
In January 2022, Microsoft stopped producing all Xbox One console SKUs to focus on Xbox Series X/S production, so it was only a matter of time before Xbox Studios stopped developing games for it.
However, that doesn’t mean third-party developers have given up on the Xbox One, so it still has some life left.
