It was one of THE exciting things of the gaming year so far: Microsoft’s new multiplatform strategy, which so far only brought selected Xbox titles to PlayStation and Switch. According to a new report, this will change in the long term!
There was a great outcry among Xbox fans when rumors spread that Microsoft would also make its larger first-party titles available on the PlayStation and other competing platforms in the future. After a few days, the company’s official business update followed, in which a new multiplatform strategy was actually confirmed, but it was noticeably smaller than initially assumed.
A total of four previously Xbox-exclusive titles have since been confirmed for PlayStation and/or Switch – and these are not all the big blockbusters, but rather smaller titles or titles that have been available for a long time such as Hi-Fi Rush or Sea of Thieves. However, if a new report is to be believed, then Microsoft will certainly place many more Xbox games on competing platforms in the long term.
The new report has its origins at the recently held Game Developers Conference 2024, where there was also whispers about Microsoft’s new multiplatform approach. Accordingly, some third-party publishers there also indicated that they were losing faith in the Xbox ecosystem.
As a result, via GI Microcast a new report by Christopher Dring, who works for the renowned industry magazine GamesIndustry.biz, published, which deals with further developments in this matter. Dring goes out on a limb and says that, based on his understanding and information, “the majority” of modern Xbox games will actually be released for the PlayStation 5 “at some point.”
The background for this future direction should also be the fact that Microsoft cannot achieve the desired success and sales figures with its Xbox brand, especially in Europe. This was also heard from publisher circles at the GDC.
Xbox boss Phil Spencer had also made it clear in the past that previous Xbox exclusive games would also be placed on other platforms from time to time. In this respect, he also referred to other successful titles such as Fortnite, which are basically available for every modern device with gaming capacity. If Dring is correct with his information from the GDC, then in the future not only smaller or older Xbox titles will also be available for the Sony PS5 console, but possibly even larger Xbox exclusive games. We will of course keep you updated on further developments!
