Sometimes you find the most exciting things in the back of the garage or up in the attic that you had actually long forgotten about. Something similar probably also applies to the Internet, because Twitter user (now X-User) SpideyRanger has now stumbled upon old material from Monolith Productions’ attempt at a Batman game in the Nolanverse.
At the height of the Batman hype surrounding Christopher Nolan’s trilogy about the Dark Knight, the video game industry naturally also wanted its share of the cake. Above all, of course, the Arkham series from Rocksteady. But Monolith, a subsidiary of Warner Bros. Games, also tried a game about Gotham’s favorite heroes.
However, they were less successful than their colleagues from Rocksteady and had to scrap the project after a while. In order not to have to completely throw away the work that had already been done, the Americans simply grabbed the Middle-earth license and built their big hit Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor based on the discontinued Batman game.
Thanks to SpideyRanger, we now get an idea of how far the project has already come and which mechanics have made it to Middle-earth.
Although there were never any official statements as to why the game was ultimately canceled, according to research by DidYouKnowGaming, Christopher Nolan simply never gave his blessing. Apparently the developers weren’t even able to actually get in touch with Nolan because he was either busy or just wasn’t interested enough.

Definitely an exciting “attic find” and a nice piece of gaming history.
