So, there’s a live-action Minecraft movie coming out next year (somehow). But, look at this, now we’ve also learned that Netflix and Mojang are working with WildBrain (Sonic Prime) on an original animated series.
As gaming-related TV and movie hits continue to rise, and Hollywood continues to double down on interactive media as the next source of cool stories with mainstream appeal, comic book adaptations are no longer a super safe bet. Of course, we all know that depends on quality and market saturation (or lack thereof), but hey, companies love to follow trends, so let them try everything.

A small trailer including the creeper was released on May 30th across Netflix and Minecraft’s social media channels, and while no release window was announced, the announcement featured the traditional “coming soon” ending, suggesting it could be coming to the platform soon.
This isn’t the first time Netflix has offered Minecraft stories for the whole family, as Telltale Games ported Minecraft: Story Mode, an episodic point-and-click video game, to the platform back in late 2018. The game, which Netflix published, was removed from the platform in late 2022 after Telltale shut down. While the company quickly relaunched it, Story Mode never returned to Netflix. Who knows, maybe it’ll return before the series is released.
As far as anyone knows, the new series has no connection to Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures’ ambitious take on the series, which recently wrapped filming and boasts an impressive cast that includes Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, Jennifer Coolidge, Kate McKinnon and Jemaine Clement.
The adaptation is being directed by Jared Hess (Napoleon: Big Time) from a screenplay by Chris Bowman and Hubbell Palmer (Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life). We still don’t know what it’ll look and feel like, but we wouldn’t be surprised if Warners ends up with another Barbie-sized hit, given how popular Minecraft remains nearly 13 years after its full release.
